Will the Call of Duty be Attractive on Smartphones and PDAs?

The only mobile version of the best-selling (and some would say overly-milked) Call of Duty franchise ran on Pocket PCs. And only on the most powerful of them. Which pretty much limits who can play with it, since not everyone can afford to spend for a high-end PDA.

So it's interesting to see that Glu Mobile has announced that it will be bringing their own version Call of Duty to Smartphones, with the help of Activision and Glu's service provider partners. And they're promising it "will be available to consumers on major wireless carriers around the world later this year". It's probable that Glu and Activision will come up with a Java-powered variant of the game, which means it will work on a lot more devices.

The question remains though: can Call of Duty work on a mobile? The first-person PC shooter works well when controlled with a mouse and keyboard, definitely not available on a cell phone's numeric keypad. Will Glu and Activision go for broke and bring a 3D experience to the limited hardware of smartphones? Or will they concentrate on providing an enjoyable game, even at the cost of less-than-stellar graphics and different mechanics?
