That's because a competing wireless communication technology, HSDPA, also lets users enjoy super fast connectivity through smartphones and PDAs, wherever they are. And HSDPA is also an upgrade of GSM cellular networks, which is currently the world's most popular communications standard for mobiles.
In other words, it will be a lot cheaper for service operators to simply upgrade their networks to support HSDPA. wimax is more costly because providers will have to start from scratch, shelling out more money to build new kinds of towers and support structures.
It isn't certain that WiMax will fail and HSDPA will succeed. Only time will tell. But, given the latter's advantages, and the fact that lots of smartphones and PDAs support HSDPA, it's tougher for WiMax to succeed.
