Here's some info based from a survey of 1,230 conducted last May:

Male: 72% Female: 28%
15-24: 31% 25-34: 32% 35-49: 31% 50+: 6%
Completed College: 58% (compared to 43% average)
Buyers living in NY or California: 43% (approx double the national average)
iPod Ownership: 52%
Household Income: $75,600 (26% higher than national average)

Obviously, the survey only applies to the US populace, since they'll get first dibs this June 29. If the information is accurate, then it looks like the iPhone enjoys a broad appeal, even before the first unit rolls off the shelf.
