For hermits living far far away from civilization, Steve Jobs announced Apple's entry into the smartphone market during his MacWorld keynote. But it seems way way back (in 1985), Apple was issued a patent for a literal "apple phone." This doesn't help against the Cisco lawsuit, since the name "iPhone" is nowhere to be found.
A fruit that opens to reveal a phone inside? Cute, but a novelty that wears off immediately. I guess even Apple Inc.'s tradition for superb industrial design had to start somewhere.
