The Players in Google’s Android Game: Who’s In and Who’s Out
Nov 6, 2007

It makes no sense to rehash or summarize the lengthy announcement of Android, "the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices" backed by Google and its mobile partners.
What's notable though is that companies like Nokia, Palm, and of course Apple-all companies with their own established mobile platforms-are not joining the party. Android is seen as the first significant step towards Google's much-awaited foray into the mobile handset market.

I can understand why AT&T is not in it, they don’t want to cannibalize the sales of iphones since they have multi-year contract with Apple. But what is Verizon thinking? They have nothing to lose, right? But on a second thought, it’s a open platform. Verizon might have to open their proprietary platform a little in order to accommadate the “Alliance”. Or maybe Verizon already has something more remarkable than gphone underway. Hey, you never know.
