Taking Control of Your GPRS
Sure, technologies like HSDPA and WiMax are coming, and we'll enjoy mobile broadband access soon enough. But for now, lots of us are still using GPRS to download content, or access the internet. And with many service providers still refusing to provide unlimited data plans (instead of a flat monthly rate they insist on charging you for how much you've downloaded), it's important to know how much the connection's been used, so we won't Faint when the bill arrives.

For the Treo 600, 300, 270, and 180, you can download TrafficStat 4.1 A reviewer says that the program will also work the Treo 650. The free trial has "certain limitations," while $9.99 will get you the full version.

For Windows Mobile Smartphones, check out the Smartphone GPRS Traffic Monitor. You can download a trial or purchase the full version for $7.95.

For Symbian Devices, you can check out this great article over at All About Symbian. Aside from stressing the importance of watching "your GPRS counter like a hawk" (which is in your phone's call log), the article also features links to useful apps.

But is HSDPA Coming Out on Smartphones and PDAs? Sure. Nokia's new flagship, the N95, is HSDPA-ready, and so is the HTC P3600.
