It's funny how many gadgets today mimic Star Trek devices. Remember Kirk's communicator? In the original series, he'd flip it open in his distinctive, ham-actor way. Kinda like how today's posers open their clamshell phones with a flourish. And I bet the Tricorder inspired the PDA somehow. And just like the medical tricorders, a PDA can now display patient info, though not as directly as implied on the show.
If you've ever watched Star Trek, you'd know the gadgets served as plot conveniences. The communicator allowed quick access with the ship, while the tricorder immediately gave the info needed to solve the problem. Perhaps we can say that today's smartphone and PDAs are tools that allow us to advance the story of our lives, solving our daily problems through easy access to information.
Bad Design: I don't know why people insist on creating themes that make it harder for people to read the text.
For Trekkies Only: On a nearly related note, looks like Paramount's remastered the original series!
