The Sony Ericsson W910i and W960i are the latest Walkman phones by Sony Ericsson. These phones are packed with many improvements when compared to their predecessor W850i. Sam Chun of Mobile Burn has recently posted a very informative review of the W910i. Here are a few important points from his review:
Design:
The Sony Ericsson W910i is a strongly built rectangular sliding phone measuring 99m x 50mm x 12.5mm with a 2.4 inch screen.
Functions:
The W910i is a GSM and 3G phone with good quality call reception and call audio.
It features a very smooth video teleconferencing
facility. It has a built in call filtering facility that rejects or diverts unwanted calls.
It has a very well developed phonebook system with Smart Search that can store up to 1000 contacts
Voice commands can be use to control calls when using a Handsfree device.
The texting system on the W910i is very user friendly as a user can start typing a new message with a very few clicks unlike other devices.
It supports POP, IMAP and Push email.
It comes with a USB cable and Bluetooth for connectivity and synchronization.
It has a 2 Megapixel CMOS camera with a maximum 1600x1200 resolution.
The camera comes with the usual white balance, color effects, self-timer and night mode functions.
The camera also has the usual normal, panorama, frame effects and burst camera modes.
The picture quality and colors are good and accurate most of the time.
The W910i is capable of taking MP4 videos at QVGA resolution. Videos can be used as ringvideos.
It also features an Accelerometer to rotate the pictures with device movement. The Accelerometer can also be used to change music with the new shake control feature.
The Walkman interface is more streamlined and files can be sorted by artist, playlist, genre and date of release. It supports 3GPP, AAC, AMR, AWB, iMelody, MIDI, MP3, MP4, 3GPP, M4A, Real8, WAV, WMA and XMF audio file formats and 3GPP, MP4, Real8, SDP, and WMV video file formats.
W910i's audio quality is not as good as some other rival phones in the market.
The browser pre-installed on the W910i is NetrFront 3.4, which is an average browser.
Built-in applications include alarm, calculator, calendar, schedule, tasks, notes, code memo, timer, stopwatch, PictureDJ, VideoDJ, TrackID, Remote Control application, V-Rally 3D game, Lumines Block & Marble 3D
User Interface:
The W910i runs on the new Sony Ericsson A200 platform.
The combination of dial and hang-up keys, C button and the new 3 soft key system has made the phone more user friendly.
The interface on the phone is very attractive and speedy. There are a number of nice themes available and menu style can be changed as part of the theme.
The phone also has an activity menu which is basically a short cut menu to make navigation easy.
Here is the conclusion by Sam Chun
With the exception of keypad ergonomics, the w910i is a well-designed device. The user interface is almost perfect, with slight limitations to customizability. The new media screen is attractive, intuitive, and responsive. The inclusion of a generous assortment of applications is welcomed. The Bluetooth remote controller for presentations, the TrackID function, and the motion sensing games are all good examples.
In terms of music, however, the lack of a 3.5mm earphone jack and the average sound quality has made the device lose some of its luster. As such, I can only give it a "Recommended" rating.
