Smartphones + Social Networking = The Luke Johnson Phone Experiment
Nov 6, 2006

Probably a reason why mobiles and the Internet have become so successful is because they cater to a deep-seated human need; the need to communicate and express oneself. So when Luke Johnson went on YouTube and publicized his number, asking anyone watching to ring him up, the calls came. And came and came and came.
"The calls just started coming every half-second," he recalled. "I'd be talking to someone and I'd get beeped in by about four other people-and they were short conversations as it was!"
So what can we learn from The Luke Johnson Phone Experiment?
- Out of the billion who are connected to the Internet, at least 7,000 of them have no problem calling a total stranger.
- Leap Wireless International's Cricket service really does charge $45/month, even if you receive hundreds of international calls. Feel free to check out their other unlimited plans.
Thanks to RCR Wireless for the heads-up.

A bit silly but I’ve got to admit, it’s quite a clever marketing stunt.
I’ve got to agree with what you said about the reason why these two technologies are successful.
And from where I’m seated, I can see that there ARE web-to-mobile applications made available to the common user that lets them stay connected even when they’re mobile. It’s actually cool!

That’s why I think the future of the Internet lies with mobile applications. As more and more people connected at home, broadband providers’ potential market will slowly disappear. Then I think that’s when they’ll shift to trying to provide customers internet access while they’re mobile. Know what I mean?
