Should Laptops Also be Phones?

Once I found out about that HP Laptops with EV-DO built-in, I couldn't help but think: should manufacturers merge laptops and smartphones?

The laptop would come with its own slot for accepting account identity cards such as SIMS, and the built-in phone would provide users with much more functionality. Like say, do a video call using the laptop's webcam, or record calls on the hard disk for record. Bluetooth headsets would still allow conversations to be carried out wirelessly, or a headset could be used to save battery life.

This setup will let users have the best of both worlds. They can use the phone's mobile connectivity software to surf anywhere, with the power and convenience of a desktop browser. The integration also means that syncing contact and other PIM info between the two devices will be a snap.

Of course, some of you are probably wondering: what if the user only wants to bring around their phone, and not the entire computer? When I said merge, I meant that literally, because this laptop actually comes in two pieces. The smaller part is actually a stand-alone phone that detaches when you don't need the computer. It will also carry its own battery, meaning the user won't be limited by the relatively short battery lives of portable computers.

What do you think? Is such a setup feasible?
