Philippine Service Providers Sanctioned for Sending SMS Spam
Yesterday a story that made the front page of The Manila Times caught my attention:
The NTC ordered Globe and its CPs [content providers] to pay P12,200 [$250] for sending 61 text spam messages to complainant, Antonio M. Santos.
The NTC also ordered Smart and EGG [its content provider] to pay P20,800 [$430] to complainants Luis M. Brillantes and Samuel S. Sabile.
This is a promising story, since it shows that the NTC (think of it as the Philippine FCC) is serious about cracking down on SMS spam, which is a steadily growing problem over here.
But the offending service and content providers wouldn't have been punished in the first place, if Messrs. Santos, Brillantes and Sabile hadn't lodged complaints. Kudos to them, and to the NTC, for their willingness to battle SMS spam.
If you regularly receive SMS spam, do you know who to complain to?

We can’t run from spam. Not even on a cell phone?

Unfortunately, that’s the price of easy and relatively cheap communication. It facilitates the spammers’ irritating intrusion into our lives.
