Mozilla-Based Browser for the Nokia N800 in the Works

The Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is a pretty versatile PDA, by virtue of its large screen, built-in camera, surfing abilities, expandability options, connectivity suite, and bundled third-party apps. The only thing lacking here is a phone, but it isn't unreasonable to expect some master coder to come up with a VoIP solution.

In the meantime, you can check the latest browser Maemo, the makers of the N800's current OS/browser, is working on. Based on the Gecko rendering engine, the same that will power mozilla firefox 3.0 when it comes out, this new N800 browser now has a beta version available for download. Nokia N800 Internet Tablet owners, check out browser.garage.maemo.org for more details.

Thanks to the mystery e-mailer for the heads-up.

For connecting to the Internet, you can either use Wi-Fi or pair the N800 with a Bluetooth enabled cell phone. I tried both the methods and got connected to the Internet very fast. Nokia N800 has Opera 8 Web browser along with support for Flash 7, JavaScript so you can watch videos straight out of the box from sites like Google Video and YouTube. I had no complaints about the browser; it optimized the pages to fit in the screen and yet kept them true to the form. I would still say that the Web experience here is better than smartphones and PDAs. There are plenty of other ways to stay connected, the Nokia N800 supports IMAP4 and POP3 accounts.
