LG recently also demonstrated the chip by using a Windows Mobile test terminal and successfully achieved download speeds of 60 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps at its Mobile Communication Technology Research Lab in Anyang, Korea. This is certainly a breakthrough as the maximum download speeds achievable on current HSDPA networks is 7.6 Mbps.
LTE 4G Technology is gaining a lot of popularity these days and many telecom operators all over the world plan to switch to this new technology in the near future. This is because 85% of WCDMA based telecom operators can easily upgrade to LTE technology with far less cost and effort instead of implementing an entirely new technology. LTE technology also offers high speed download speeds allowing users to download a 700 MB movie file in less than one minute at maximum capacity. It also allows simultaneous streaming of four HD movies without any buffering. Strategy Analytics, a market research company predicts that the global LTE handset market will reach 70 million units in 2012 and 150 million units by 2013.
In addition to the mobile modem chip, LG is also developing a LTE-based data card that will replace the traditional wireless cards found on PC's and offer faster wireless internet connections.
Here is what Dr. Woo Hyun Paik, CTO of LG Electronics had to say on this recent development:
"Now that LG has developed and tested the first 4G handset modem, a commercially viable LTE handset is on the horizon. This latest breakthrough gives us a strong technology advantage that we will use to bolster our industry leadership."
