Juniper Research’s $2800+ Report States the Obvious

Here are two points from the report's summary:

  • Dual Mode Mobile Handsets (Cellular/VoIP over Wi-Fi ) will dominate this market generating almost $68bn in revenues by 2012 out of a total market of $82bn.
  • Single Mode VoIP over Wi-Fi Handsets will continue to see a conservative uptake primarily due to high pricing – resulting in revenues of only $1.5bn by 2012.

It's obvious that a multi-function (Dual Mode) device will perform better than a one-trick pony (Single Mode). Anyone tracking recent smartphone and PDA trends will see that the future is in convergence. As gadgets start handling many features well, they're becoming more attractive to buyers, who want everything they need in one neat package.

But Juniper's report isn't useless. At the very least, it highlights the fact that in the smartphone and PDA industries, VoIP is here to stay.
