iPhone Battery Replacement Costs More Than $86 and Will Wipe Data

But don't take my word for it:

How much does it cost to participate in the program?
The program costs $79, plus $6.95 shipping. The program cost is $85.95 per unit.
All fees are in US dollars and are subject to local tax. Service may not be available if your iPhone has been damaged due to accident or abuse.

will the data on my iPhone be preserved?
No, the repair process will clear all data from your iPhone. It is important to sync your iPhone with iTunes to back up your contacts, photos, email account settings, text messages, and more. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information while servicing your iPhone and does not offer any data transfer service.

Oh, and the service will take 3 business days to complete.

This isn't a big problem for iPhone users–yet. After all, it takes at least a year for a battery to stop retaining power. Let's just hope Apple comes up with something better, free from the Steve Jobs tax and the Cupertino premium.

It is misleading to say the battery will stop retaining power after one year. The battery will have less capacity after about 400 full cycles, but that does not mean it stops retaining power. It will provide service for far longer than one year.

Didn’t mean to mislead anyone. I did say at least a year. Remember that as the battery loses capacity it the charging cycles will get more frequent. In any case, it will eventually reach a point where it can only store minimal amounts of energy, just like your usual gadget battery.
