Indian Giant Videocon Plans to Enter Mobile Market Through CDMA; Huh?

Videocon is a company with a pretty varied portfolio. Now the group is planning to take on more by becoming a service provider in India.

The thing is, Videocon has decided to use a cdma, rather than GSM, network. All this despite the fact that GSM remains the world's most popular cellular communications technology.

The numbers aren't very encouraging for Videocon. With the majority of Indian mobile users under GSM coverage, one wonders how the company will attract converts. Moving from GSM to CDMA usually requires buying a new mobile or handset, a cost that may be too much for some.
