Any device on such a list is represented by its MAC address, which is a semi-unique "serial number" for the hardware used to connect a network. In short, my officemate needed to know the LifeDrive's MAC address, so that the sys admin could add it to the list of allowed devices.
Turns out finding a LifeDrive's MAC address is really simple: just look at the back of the unit. You'll find it below the serial number ("S/N:"), indicated by "MAC:".
Given the security of many company networks today, it helps to know your smartphone or PDA phones MAC address. Your manual probably has instructions on how to find this out. Failing that, you can always search online.
