Google Rumored to Bid in 700Mhz Wireless Auction
Filed in archive Google , Rumors by Rico Mossesgeld on November 25, 2007

Before the 700Mhz auction started, a bidding process that would determine who would have license to wireless frequencies needed for fast mobile communication, Google made a statement. It promised a bid of at least $4.6 billion dollars if the FCC would require all the auction winners to uphold four "openness principles" promoted by Google.
The FCC did not bite, and Google was roundly attacked by groups like the CTIA, who had an obvious interest in keeping future networks closed and under control.
Now reports are coming in that Google is planning to bid on the frequencies themselves. The premise is that if Google wins the licenses, the company gets to require that future operators, providers, and developers uphold Google's openness principles.
It's an interesting rumor that highlights the power of capital. Can't influence the game? Buy the whole shebang!
