Are We Expecting Too Much in a Connected Age?

It's the end of the world folks. Some lady broke up with her boyfriend thanks to the recent Blackberry outage, thinking she was being neglected. Which goes to show that since everyone's getting more and more connected, we're expecting too much of each other.

We expect people to be there to answer our calls. We expect them to immediately reply to our texts and emails. Heck, we even expect our favorite blogs to be updated frequently and regularly (sorry for breaking the fourth wall there).

But we honestly shouldn't. Because there will always be downtimes and disconnects, despite the best efforts and intentions of service providers (of course, these should be kept to minimum). Things are different with old-school, real deal communication. Even the deaf and mute expect immediate answers to their questions, especially when they express themselves to those who can obviously understand them. That's because personal interactions carry less distractions; it's harder to ignore someone when it's face-to-face.

Thanks to the connectivity provided by smartphones and PDAs, we simply receive so much information that staying on top of all that will drive us crazy. Can't we all agree that it's reasonable not to deal with everything that comes along right away? Can't we all agree that our easy access to information should make us more aware, and not become our masters?
